Job information

The Faculty of Health and Social Sciences is one of the largest faculties within the University offering a full range of undergraduate, postgraduate and vocationally orientated professional programmes for home and overseas students. Courses within the School of Healthcare Practice are concerned both with pre- professional registration and post qualifying education. We offer pre-professional courses in Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Operating Department Practice and Paramedic Sciences. We also provide courses for already qualified healthcare practitioners plus courses in public health, medical education, dental education and healthcare simulation.

The post is based in the School of Healthcare Practice and involves the supervision of the Healthcare technical team across three sites, together with this post’s designated specialist focus which is the support and development of technology-enhanced learning, predominantly in the domains of simulation and skills development and its e-portfolio.

The job also includes supporting the other technicians with practical tasks in their domains of expertise, as the team works together to deliver its varied services through the peaks and troughs of the year. The post is therefore an interesting mixture of IT specialism with generic services/resource planning and people management.

The School of Healthcare Practice has recently expanded and upgraded its IT simulation and skills suites and is now introducing a web-based e-portfolio to facilitate practice (placement) documentation and assessment, so there is plenty of opportunity to shape the systems as they roll out. The role, therefore, requires a strong ability to understand IT from the customer’s perspective, playing a pro-active part in helping customers get the best from the healthcare IT systems and products to provide and aid the teaching delivery.

The post holder’s specialist responsibilities will initially largely focus on the maintenance and development of our simulation (CAE Intuity) and e-portfolio (PebblePad) software. However, we expect that anyone with good all-round IT skills will be able to develop the technical knowledge needed and applicants do not need prior in-depth knowledge of the systems, though this would clearly be an advantage.

The need to manage the team of technicians and to work routinely with academic staff, students and external professionals means that effective planning, organisation, communication and training skills are as important as IT technical skills.
