Job Description

The East West Rail Alliance is a “pure” alliance consisting of three Non-Owner Participants (NOPs); VolkerRail, Atkins Global, Laing O’Rourke and the Owner Participant (OP), Network Rail.

East West Rail (EWR) phase 2 is a £1 billion Rail programme and one of the most prestigious projects in the UK Infrastructure pipeline. It will provide a strategic route linking key centres of economic activity between Oxford, Milton Keynes, Aylesbury and Bedford.

The trainee Materials Testing Technician position is an entry level role and suitable for someone interested in the construction industry and passionate about developing their career. No previous experience is necessary as full training will be provided on the job; however, GCSE English and Maths and possession of a full clean driving licence are mandatory due to the nature of the work – please make this clear via your CV.

Reporting to the Senior Materials Engineer, the trainee Materials Testing Technician will be required to carry out a range of duties;

  • Site sampling, preparation and testing of construction materials in accordance with relevant standards and in-house procedures
  • completing and checking worksheets
  • ensuring samples are correctly identified, registered and stored
  • ensuring all equipment provided is used appropriately and maintained in good condition
  • monitoring the properties of fresh concrete at the point of deposition (workability and maintain delivery records)
  • daily sampling of earthworks materials for the purpose of classification and quality verification

The position is a site-based role ranging from Bicester to Bletchley. The site laboratory will be a UKAS accredited facility. The successful candidate will be expected to work diligently in accordance with all safety, quality and technical procedures.

The successful candidate will have the following experience/skill set:


  • GCSE English and Maths
  • Possession of full clean driving licence
