Job Description


We are seeking an ambitious and talented Business Strategy Officer to support the delivery of the key priorities across the Planning, Growth & Sustainability (PGS) and Communities Directorates.

About us

Within the Business Strategy function no two days are the same, you will work with two fast paced, technical and customer facing Directorates to develop business plans and monitor progress against delivery of the key priorities.   You will be a critical officer in horizon scanning, ensuring good governance and providing strategic support to the Directorate Management Teams.

About the role

You will coordinate the forward plan and agenda setting for management teams, while identifying opportunities for collaborative working and ensuring compliance with corporate requirements.

This is a great role for someone seeking to develop within and learn more about local government.  The successful applicant will be working directly with services and with corporate functions across the organisation to make sure that the business runs successfully and efficiently.

Some of the key things that you’ll be involved in will be:

  • Supporting the development and coordination of business planning.
  • Being a critical officer in horizon scanning, collating information and assessing the impact on the Directorates to inform decision making and forward planning.
  • Coordination of forward planning and agenda setting of management and strategic meetings within the Directorates.

About you

You will be ambitious and motivated to deliver the best for residents, businesses, and visitors to Buckinghamshire.  You will be a confident communicator with excellent people and influencing skills. You will be a strategic thinker with great problem solving abilities, be able to multitask and to prioritise your own workload. You will have an eye for detail and a keen interest in local and national current affairs. 

Amongst other things, you will need to have:

  • Experience of service / business planning
  • Knowledge of local government and wider sector/external influences
  • Authority and credibility to build relationships and engage successfully with colleagues, partners and customers
  • A proven ability to apply high levels of imitative and strategic awareness to problem solving and decision making
  • Excellent time management skills to manage a complex workload, prioritise and set deadlines.

It would be desirable for you to have:

  • A background in or knowledge of systems, policy and practices within place based services.
  • An understanding of emerging developments within the scope of the services delivered
  • Strong influencing skills
  • Project management skills, knowledge and experience of project management tools
