NHBC have a brilliant opportunity for a Principal Technical Specialist to join their Standard Innovation and Research team based in Milton Keynes, although the role will be based remotely. The role of the Principal Technical Specialist is to be a technical lead within a team of Technical Specialists in the delivery of a set of robust NHBC Standards, supporting guidance and technical policy within defined areas of expertise in order that operational technical risk management may be effectively delivered by others within NHBC. Specifically the role of Principal Technical Specialist will be required to work as part of a wider team but would primarily focus on Building Regulatory matters and will be required to implement technical policies and guidance to future changes to Building Regulations in England and Wales including “Building a Safer Future” and the “Future Homes Standard”.
About the role
-Provide expertise to support the maintenance and development of NHBC’s Technical Risk Management Policy.
-Review, develop, publish and maintain NHBC Standards and Technical Policy for new and newly converted homes within areas of specialism to ensure NHBC’s technical position with respect to various construction methods is defined.
-Assist Operations by supporting NHBC’s Technical Risk Management (TRM) processes and procedures for Warranty and Building Regulation compliance through delivery of effective technical guidance and strategy.
-Develop and publish internal and external technical information guidance and communications in support of the consistent interpretation of Standards and Building Regulatory requirements.
-Assist the Technical and Standards Manager in the review and development of technical guidance, by sampling and auditing technical guidance produced by Senior Technical and Technical Specialists.
-Take ownership and lead the development of allocated sections of the NHBC Standards or Regulatory Requirements for new and newly converted homes.
-Contribute to NHBC’s overall management of risk including decision making on the forms of construction that NHBC accepts.
-Lead, develop and publish in areas of specialism, internal and external technical information guidance and communications in support of the consistent interpretation of NHBC Standards and Regulatory requirements including Technical Guidance Notes and position papers.
-Lead the relationship with builder customers, industry bodies, trade associations and professional institutes within defined area of specialism.
-Identify research needs to support NHBC’s Standards, Regulatory Requirements, Climate Change objectives and manage such research.
-Provide technical expertise to lead on various NHBC Foundation research projects
-Represent NHBC on external technical and regulatory groups and panels.
-Act as secretariat to various steering groups, strategy groups and client groups within NHBC.
-Represent NHBC in BSI, CEN and EU Commission work together with NHBC’s involvement with UK and European trade, professional and certification bodies.
-Support the resolution of Standards related issues and enquiries internal and external to NHBC.
-Maintain relationships between NHBC and various trade bodies where applicable and depending on specialism.
-Coordinate on behalf of NHBC any statutory consultations for Building Regulations or any other sector where appropriate
-Support the Technical and Standards Manager in the delivery of UKAS Accreditation that demonstrates the competency of NHBC in the art of inspection.
-Coordinate the relationship between NHBC and with third party certifications bodies such as KIWA and BBA
-Indepth knowledge of home building technology, including modern methods of construction and Statutory Regulations.
-Focussed specialist skills such as Building Regulations or Warranty Standards
-In depth knowledge of NHBC Buildmark and Choice warranty policies
-Full understanding of product certification and materials testing methodology, would be desirable
-Corporate member of a relevant professional institution
-Credible ambassador with strong advocacy and communication skills, and an enquiring mind
-Competent user of MS Office suite of software
-Good written, interpersonal and oral communication skills, tact and diplomacy.
-Have expert technical knowledge and experience house building/construction, NHBC standards, Building
-Regulations, procedures and structure. Good written, interpersonal and oral communication skills, tact and diplomacy and be selfmotivated.
-Knowledge and experience of technical research gained through working with a research body or achievement of a research based second degree is desirable
-Sound and appropriate levels of technical knowledge to enable sufficient understanding of customer needs and requirements.
-The ability to interpret and analyse complex data and convey complex technical information clearly.
-Confident and experienced presenter with experience of large audiences (100+ people).
-A proven ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines.
-Full driving licence
-Ability to travel throughout the UK and Europe including short term stays away from home
Salary & Benefits
£45000.00 - £48,500.00 (depending on experience)
